Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Progress

A Day of Remembrance and Reflection

Juneteenth is a significant day in American history, symbolizing the end of slavery and the beginning of freedom. Its roots lie in Texas, but Juneteenth has become a day to commemorate the abolition of slavery throughout the United States.

Historical Origins

On June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of the Civil War and the liberation of enslaved people. This date marked the end of slavery in the United States, though it took many years for freedom and equality to be fully realized.
